Six Geopolitical Zones in Nigeria

Six Geopolitical Zones in Nigeria: In 1993, General Sani Abacha, who was then the military ruler of Nigeria, established the country's current system of six geopolitical zones. The creation of these zones was intended to improve the organization and management of the government by dividing the country into regions that could be more easily administered and developed. Each zone is made up of several states, and is headed by a governor appointed by the federal government.

The six major geopolitical zones of Nigeria are North Central {also known as Middle Belt} North East, North West, South East, South South and South West. Each of the 6 regions has 5-7 states. These regions are geographically based with some exceptions. Exceptions were made to unite groups of people of similar language and ethnicity.

The six zones are as follows:

  1. North West: Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara
  2. North East: Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, Yobe
  3. North Central: Benue, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Federal Capital Territory (Abuja)
  4. South West: Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo
  5. South South: Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Rivers
  6. South East: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo
